You’re looking to move to southern California, and you’re facing a tough question: Should you move to San Diego or El Cajon?

The bad news is this will be a difficult decision. The good news is you can’t make a bad choice.

The distance from El Cajon to San Diego is only 15 miles. The communities share many cultural similarities, and both enjoy gorgeous weather year-round. But there are features that set each apart.

Any list of to things to do in El Cajon must start with the Water Conservation Garden. This peaceful and educational attraction features not only plants – from palms to cactii – but a seasonal butterfly exhibit.

Summers Past Farms is another must-see spot, an ideal outdoor locale where kids can play and adults can shop for farm-fresh fare. The Heritage of the Americas Museum highlights Native American history, archaeology and anthropology. And if you’re feeling lucky, swing by Sycuan Casino.

You know there are plenty of things to do in San Diego, starting with its world-renowned zoo. The San Diego Zoo houses 4,000 animals on 100 acres of Balboa Park. Nature lovers also will enjoy SeaWorld San Diego, which is an animal theme park, outdoor aquarium and marine mammal park.

One thing San Diego has on El Cajon: It’s big-league. San Diego is home to the Padres of Major League Baseball. Petco Park provides not only perfect sightlines for games, but a spectacular view of the harbor.

Household median income in El Cajon is on the rise, up to $56,367. Also rising are home prices: The median sale price last year was $739,000 – up 7 percent from the previous year. With a population of just over 100,000 it affords the relaxed vibe of a medium-sized city.

San Diego, on the other hand, is the eighth-largest city in the U.S., with nearly 1.4 million residents. Median household income is up to $84,454. With the median home sale price approaching $800,000, housing affordability can be a challenge here.
