So you just moved across the country to San Diego, and you’re looking to fit in. There’s no better place to start than by adopting the local teams! But who are they, exactly?

The good news for a sports fan moving to California is that there are lots of teams to choose from. The bad news is that, depending on where you live, most of them are the enemy.

You might arrive in California and, after the certified movers have unloaded your final boxes, decide to start shopping for Los Angeles Dodgers jerseys. They play in Southern California, so they’re your team, right? Nope.

You see, as a San Diegan, you must view the Dodgers as the hated rival of your newly beloved Padres. The Dodgers are the big brother you envy and plot one day to supplant. SoCal brotherhood goes only so far when the National League West title is on the line.

While the Dodgers have assembled a roster resembling an All-Star team, the Padres are no slouches. With young sluggers Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. in the lineup, the “Pads” are playoff contenders. You must, once you’ve recovered from your interstate move, root with all your might for the Padres to meet – and defeat – the Dodgers in the postseason.

If baseball isn’t your game, don’t worry. The Padres are hardly your only option as a new SD sports fan. Yes, San Diego lost the NBA’s Clippers to Los Angeles in 1984 (such treachery breeds rivalry). Then, the city lost the NFL’s Chargers to (guess where?) LA in 2016. But the local sports scene remains vibrant. San Diego is home to the Wave FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, the Seals of the National Lacrosse League, the Legion of Major League Rugby, the Sockers of the Major Arena Soccer League … hold on, there’s more … the Strike Force of the Indoor Football League and the Aviators of World TeamTennis.

And those are just the pros. Don’t forget about your San Diego State Aztecs! They compete at the Division 1 level in many sports, including football. This fall the Aztecs will begin play at the new Snapdragon Stadium, looking to build on their 19 bowl game appearances and 19 conference championships.

The university’s basketball team enjoys a loyal following at Viejas Arena on campus. The Aztecs have made the NCAA basketball tournament a dozen times, and have won 31 conference championships, including winning the Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles in 2021. Did you know the program’s most famous alumni are best known for their success away from the court? Entertainer Art Linkletter played for SDSU in the 1930s; and onetime point guard Tony Gwynn, a two-sport star, became a Hall of Fame baseball player for the Padres.
