Your Del Mar Movers
Del Mar, Spanish for “Of the Sea,” is a charming beach town in San Diego County, California. Established in 1885 as a seaside resort, Del Mar is known for its stunning coastline, historic charm, and the famous Del Mar Horse Races held every summer at the Del Mar racetrack. With a population of 3,954 as of the 2020 census, this small town offers a tight-knit community with rich history and natural beauty.
Del Mar is a small, seaside hideaway approximately 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego. Defined by calm salt water lagoons on each end, this charming, laid-back town is best known for its exceptional weather, world-famous thoroughbred racetrack, the county fair, fabulous beaches, haute cuisine, and unique shopping.
In 1882, the Southern California Railroad began its new route from San Diego to San Bernardino. A man by the name of Theodore Loop, who worked for the railroad, instantly fell in love with what he called “the most attractive place on the entire coast.” He and his wife, Ella, built a tent city on the beach, which Ella called Del Mar after a popular poem titled “The Fight on Paseo Del Mar.” Today, Del Mar remains one of the most beautiful destinations along the Western Coastline. The City is comprised of two square miles of coastal land and has a population around 4,500.
History of Del Mar
The historic Canfield-Wright House is a notable landmark reflecting Del Mar’s Mission Revival style architecture. Del Mar’s history dates back to the early 1880s when Theodore M. Loop and his wife Ella first settled the area. Inspired by Bayard Taylor’s poem “The Fight of Paso del Mar,” Ella named the site Del Mar. In 1885, Colonel Jacob Taylor purchased land with visions of creating a seaside resort for the affluent.
During World War II, the United States Navy operated a Naval Auxiliary Air Facility for blimps in Del Mar. The city has faced challenges with coastal erosion and climate change, adopting various adaptation strategies such as seawalls and beach nourishment.
Geography and Climate
Del Mar is one of the few places where the rare Torrey pine tree naturally occurs. The city is bordered by the Los Peñasquitos Lagoon to the south and the San Dieguito Lagoon to the north. The bluffs along Del Mar’s south beach are prone to collapse, highlighting the area’s vulnerability to climate change and sea level rise.
The city’s climate is mediterranean-subtropical, featuring warm, dry summers and mild, humid winters. The average yearly temperature is approximately 65 °F (18 °C), with heavy marine layer clouds frequently blanketing the area due to its coastal location.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, Del Mar’s population was 3,954. The racial makeup is predominantly White, with a significant percentage of Asian residents. The median household income is $185,335, reflecting the town’s affluent nature.
Government and Education
Del Mar is governed by a city council with five elected representatives. The city is part of the 38th Senate District and the 77th Assembly District in the California State Legislature. In the U.S. House of Representatives, Del Mar is in California’s 49th congressional district.
