The Cost of Moving
You have found a new place to live, maybe even have a new job but now you need to find an affordable mover that you can trust with your belongings. There are companies that will help you move across the street, or across the country and while some of them may be cheap, some of them may be expensive and some of these companies are simply run down scam artists who steal things.
First, know that you will have to do a little research and sometimes play detective because when it comes to moving wether its a local move in San Diego or a move cross country, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
If you are moving locally within California, less than 100 miles from your current home, your move cost is going to be based on an hourly rate. That hourly labor rate is generally based on the number of movers you will need. The kicker here is that many moving companies have add-ons. These additional fees can be for anything. Common add-on moving fees can be for: fuel, stairs, long carries, bulky items, because you want to pay with a credit card, almost anything. As long as your overall final move cost does not exceed the Max4 Tariff, they can charge you for anything they like.
So what are you supposed to do? You get EVERYTHING in writing. You make sure you get a proper Not to Exceed and you do a little research about your move – Check that they are licensed by the state, check the BBB and read some on-line reviews. Keep in mind that no reviews may be better than bad reviews.
When you are moving long distance your cost of moving is going to be based on the weight of your shipment, the distance moving and any “services” you may need. There are two easy ways to keeping your long distance moving costs down – take only what you need and do the packing yourself.
If an item has no sentimental value and you can replace it easily – get rid of it. The cost of having your movers pack your household belongings can cost as much as the actual move. Save yourself some money and pack it yourself.
If a company is dirt cheap, don’t expect professional movers and supreme service to show up at your door. While some of these cheap companies are still reliable and get the job done, this goes back to my first point which is research. You must always research.
